How does Bookish.ae work?

It’s easy to rent books on Bookish.ae!

1) Join & Rent: Simply pick your plan and select your books. Choose from thousands of bestselling adult fiction, adult non-fiction, teen & young adult, and children’s books. Renting books saves you 40-75% over buying them.

2) Schedule & Receive: We’ll drop off your books during your preferred time. Delivery and return are always free. We deliver all over Dubai. No more costly trips to the bookstore.

3) Read & Return: There are no due dates or late fees, so that you can enjoy books you love, longer. When you’re ready, go online and choose more books. We’ll pick up the books you read and drop off new books to enjoy.

What plans do you offer and what are the subscription fees?

We offer 4 different plans to suit your reading habits and budget.

1) Book Liker: 2 books per month, 2 ADULT books at a time, AED 49 per month

2) Book Lover: unlimited books per month, 4 ANY books at a time, AED 99 per month

3) Book Family: unlimited books per month, 8 ANY books at a time plus a free children’s gift for new members, AED 129 per month

4) Little Book Lovers (for children): unlimited books per month, 4 CHILDREN'S books at a time plus a free children’s gift for new members, AED 49 per month

You can join for 6 months or 12 months. All plans are one-time payment and an AED 100 refundable book deposit will be charged when you join.

How many books can I have at a time?

The number of books you can have at a time depends on your membership plan. Book Likers can have 2 books at a time, while Book Lovers and Little Book Lovers are allowed 4 books at a time. Book Family plan members are allowed 8 books at a time.

Can you explain more about how it works?

Sure. Here's an example. Suppose you join the Book Lover plan for 6 months. You can get 4 books delivered at a time as many times each month as you want. So we'll drop off 4 books, you finish those, pick 4 more, and we'll bring 4 new ones and get the old ones. We will do that as many times as you want in 1 month and delivery is always free. At the end of 7 months (because you get 1 month free), we'll automatically renew your membership unless you tell us to cancel it.

I have more than 1 child. Do I have to buy multiple Little Book Lovers plans?

Nope. Your children can share the Little Book Lovers plan. Since 4 books at a time are included in the plan, you can get children's books for multiple ages. When they finish the books, you can send back a few or all of them and get more. We will only send 1 toy as the joining gift, but if you need more, send us an email at info@bookish.ae and we'll let you know the price to buy another one.

Can I get adult books with the Little Book Lover plan?

You can only order children's books with the Little Book Lover plan because it is a children's membership.

SPECIAL TERMS FOR MONTHLY PLANS

Do I have to renew my monthly membership every month?

You don't have to renew your membership every month! Your Bookish.ae monthly membership will continue month-to-month until you cancel it. If you are paying by Paypal, credit card, or debit card, your membership fee will be automatically charged. If you are paying by cash or check on delivery, your membership fee will be due when you receive new books for the month.

When does my monthly membership renew?

Monthly memberships renew on the same date of the month that you joined. For example, if you joined on April 29th, your membership will renew on May 29th. If you are ever unsure when your membership renews, log into My Account and look at the date of your Recurring Profile. If you're still unsure, email us and we'll let you know.

What if I don't want to renew my monthly membership?

If you choose to cancel or not to renew your membership, send us an email BEFORE your membership is set to end. Otherwise, the system will automatically renew and charge you (if you paid by Paypal). If you paid by cash on delivery, you will risk losing your refundable deposit. We will reply to your email to confirm your cancellation, then call or email you to schedule a date and time to retrieve the books you borrowed. We will refund your AED 100 in cash when we pick up your last book delivery. As long as you have books from Bookish.ae, you are considered a member. Your membership is not officially cancelled until the books are returned.

What happens if I don't pay my membership fee if I'm cash or check on delivery?

Failure to pay your membership fee within 1 month of your renewal date will forfeit your deposit and result in automatic cancellation of your membership. You will receive notices by email and phone prior to the cancellation of your membership. As of March 9, 2017, monthly members must pay by debit or credit card. Cash on delivery is available only for 6 month memberships.

When do I get my free month (months)?

One free month is only given to members who sign up for a 6 month plan.

What if I want to get a 6 month membership after having a monthly plan?

Smart move! Upgrading to a 6 month membership actually saves you money and gets you a free month. Send us an email at info@bookish.ae so we can change your membership manually in our system. Once your membership has been changed, we'll send you an email that details the new plan and whether you owe an additional amount or can expect a refund for the new plan.

JOIN & PAY

How do I join Bookish.ae and get books?

You can join Bookish.ae, add books to your Rental Queue, and schedule your delivery all at the same time. Click here for a detailed guide to joining and adding books to your queue. If you have any problems, email or call us and we will help you.

Can I use a debit card or credit card (Visa or Mastercard) to pay for my membership fees?

Yes you can! When prompted to select your payment method, select debit or credit card. You will directed to the secure Telr payment site to checkout. Be sure to use a card for which you can receive a one-time password (OTP) from your bank by SMS. You should be redirected back to Bookish.ae after you checkout so that you can choose books to add to your Rental Queue. United Arab Emirates Dirhams (AED) is the only currency accepted for payment.

Do you accept cash or check on delivery?

Yes we do! Cash or Check on Delivery is available only for 6 month memberships. At checkout, select the Cash or Check on Delivery payment method. Although the delivery driver will have some change, we prefer that you have exact change if you pay by cash on delivery. Checks must be made payable to Bookish DMCC. Monthly members must pay by debit or credit card.

How do I use my discount coupon code?

If you subscribe to our email list, you will automatically be offered a 10% off discount code. Or, if you have received a discount code from a blogger or affiliate we work with, you can use this code when you sign up for a plan. Simply click Join for 6 Months or Join for 12 Months under your chosen plan to add the membership to your shopping cart. On the left side of the screen, click Discount Codes. Enter your coupon code in the box and click Apply Coupon. The cart total on the box below will change so that you can proceed to checkout. If the cart total does not change, please pay the amount requested. We will see the issue in our system and email you. You will receive a cash refund, if you pay by Paypal, when we deliver your books.

When do I get my free month (months)?

If you signed up for a 6 month plan, you automatically receive 1 month free. 12 month plans automatically receive 2 months free. These and any additional free months you earn, will be added to the end of the plan you paid for. Your membership will not be renewed automatically until your free months have been used.

Why do I have to pay a deposit?

We ask that all new Bookish.ae member pay an AED 100 refundable book deposit because we need to ensure that we are compensated for the books in case you damage, lose, or do not return the books. You only have to pay this deposit once. Your deposit will be automatically applied when you renew your membership.

Is my deposit refundable?

Your deposit is refundable as long as the books are returned to us in good condition. If you damage, lose, or do not return the books, we will deduct the REPLACEMENT value of the book from your AED 100 deposit. The replacement value is the amount it would cost us to buy the book NEW, not the secondhand (used) bookstore price.

If you choose to cancel or not to renew your membership, we will refund your AED 100 in cash when we pick up your last book delivery.

My debit card, credit card, or Paypal account was charged in error. How do I get a refund?

If you think we have charged your account in error, email us immediately so we can check our records and refund your payment. If your Paypal account has been charged in error, we will refund your Paypal account for no fee. If you paid by debit or credit card, any refunds will be onto the original mode of payment. You will be told if any fees will be deducted from your deposit before we provide the refund. We will refund your AED 100 in cash when we pick up your last book delivery.

Can I join Bookish.ae over the phone?

You can call us at +971 4 552 7240 to join Bookish.ae over the phone or come into our office. However, we prefer that you join online because you will be able to enter your information accurately and quickly. Besides, you'll have fun browsing all the books you can rent.

Can I put the membership in my child's or husband's name?

The membership should be in the name of whoever is going to deal with the account issues. Do not put the membership in your child's name because, in our experience, they get scared when we email or call them on their mobiles. Besides, your child cannot deal with payment or delivery issues. Unless the membership is for your husband, do not provide your husband's email address or mobile number. We have found that miscommunication frequently occurs because the membership is not for them.

OTHER TERMS & CONDITIONS

Can I purchase a gift membership for someone?

If you'd like to get a membership for someone else, call or email us and we'll help you set it up.

How do I change my membership plan?

You can upgrade or downgrade your Bookish.ae membership. Send us an email at info@bookish.ae so we can change your membership manually in our system. Once your membership has been changed, we'll send you an email that details the new plan and whether you owe an additional amount or can expect a refund for the new plan.

What happens to my membership if I move?

Your Bookish.ae membership moves with you! Just update your address in My Account after you move or send us an email at info@bookish.ae. If you forget to update My Account, be sure to tell us you moved when we call to confirm your next delivery.

I’m going away for the summer. Can I pause my membership?

You sure can! You can pause your membership if you won’t be here for the summer by emailing us at info@bookish.ae, giving us the dates of the months you want to pause, and letting us know when you will return the books you have. Please note:

* We can only pause full months while you’re away.
* You must email us prior to pausing your membership. In other words, you cannot pause your membership for previous dates.
* You must return the books in order to pause your membership. Otherwise, your membership will remain active (not paused).
* Your membership will not be paused until we receive the books you have.

When you return, we will resume your membership.

I’m leaving Dubai. How do I get a refund on my membership?

We will prorate the unused full months from your membership fee. That amount and your deposit will be refunded in cash when we pick up your last book delivery.

I don't want to renew my membership. How do I send the books back and get my refundable deposit?

If you choose to cancel or not to renew your membership, send us an email BEFORE your membership is set to expire. Otherwise, the system will automatically renew and charge you (if you paid by Paypal). We will reply to your email to confirm your cancellation, then call or email you to schedule a date and time to retrieve the books you borrowed. We will refund your AED 100 in cash when we pick up your last book delivery.

BOOKS & BOOKISH BAG

What kinds of books do you have?

We have all kinds of books including Adult Fiction, Adult Nonfiction, Teen & Young Adult, and Children's Books. We always have the latest bestselling books, but we also are constantly increasing our selection of classics and favorites. We add at least 100 books a month, so if you don't see something you like now, just wait...we'll carry it soon! If you have book recommendations, please email us at info@bookish.ae.

What condition are the books in?

Some of our books are new. Some of our books are pre-loved. We only rent books that are in good or perfect condition. Once a book has been rented so many times that it becomes only fair or poor quality, we sell it at flea markets around Dubai.

The book I received is new. Can I wrap it?

Please DO NOT wrap the books. We love that you want to keep our books in good condition. However, wrapping books in clear plastic takes a lot of skill and if you damage the book (or wrap it poorly), the replacement cost will be deducted from your deposit. The best thing to do is read the book taking good care of it as you would one of your own, then return it to us so that we can wrap it if necessary.

What should I do if a book is rented (not available)?

When you go to a book's description page, you will see if it is Available in green or Rented in red. If the book you want is rented, add it to My Wishlist by clicking the heart icon next to Add To Rental Queue. The book will only become Available once someone has returned it. We recommend that you find another book to rent (we have thousands of books!) and check My Wishlist regularly to see if the book is available. Usually, we only carry 1 copy of a book, unless the book is extremely popular. If you are unable to find what you are looking for, email us at info@bookish.ae and we'll help you.

What should I do if I damaged or lost a book?

If you have damaged or lost a book, please let us know immediately. We will deduct the REPLACEMENT value of the book from your AED 100 deposit. The replacement value is the amount it would cost us to buy the book NEW, not the secondhand (used) bookstore price.

Can I keep my books forever?

You can because there are no due dates and no late fees. However, it is in your best interest to return a book within 2 months of renting it because you will be unable to rent another book during that time and, eventually, you will have paid the price of buying the book new.

How often do you add books?

We add new books every single month! We upload at least 100 new books each month. Usually, though, we add between 200 and 500 books each month because we are building our book catalog.

How do you choose the books you add?

We choose the books we add to our catalog in several different ways:
1) We review best seller lists, including the New York Times Bestseller List and Nielsen Bookscan UK, to see what people are interested in reading.
2) We review Amazon's Bestseller Lists for the USA and India to see what people are buying.
3) We read The National and Gulf News Book Sections to see what is recommended locally.
4) We look at what well known local book clubs, like The Dubai Bibliophiles, are reading every month.
5) We add books that we are missing from series we already have because every book lover wants a complete series!

You brought the books in a cotton tote bag. Is it mine? Can I keep it?

Your books will be delivered in our 100% cotton Bookish tote bag. We give the books to you in this bag because it helps reduce paper bag waste and make it easier to transport the books. WE LOAN THIS BAG TO YOU. We drop off the books in the bag and expect to pick them up in the same bag. You'll be handed another tote bag with each delivery. If you don't renew your membership, we will collect the books and the bag. If you damage or lose the bag, AED 25 will be deducted from your deposit. The bag is awesome, so if you like, you can buy a bag for AED 25 by emailing us.

MEMBER PROGRAMS

What member programs to you offer?

We offer all types of member programs aimed at different age groups. For babies and toddlers, we offer weekly story times. For children, we offer a monthly story time, a princess themed story time (specifically for girls), and craft days. We also offer free tutoring, free SAT and PSAT preparation, and a summer reading challenge for children and teens. We plan to introduce more member programs in the future. Are member programs free?

All member programs are free for Bookish.ae members. There is no additional cost to attend the program above your membership fee. The only program that is free for everyone in Dubai is the Sing-Along Story Time held on the first Saturday of every month. We use this story time as a tool to get people interested in reading, the Bookish.ae book rental service, and make sure kids in Dubai can have fun with books.

How often do you have member programs?

We have member programs every month! Each program is on it's own schedule listed on our Member Programs page. We also show programs on our Google Calendar and our Facebook Events page.

Where are member programs held?

Currently, all member programs are held at the Bookish.ae office in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT). You can find our specific location and a map on our Contact Us page.

How do I register for a member program?

To register for a member program, go to our Facebook page, click the Events tab under the cover photo, and click the member program you are interested in. Be sure to check the date and time because all of our programs for the month will be listed there. In the Guests section, click that you want to Attend. If you have any issues, you can always leave a comment on the page or send us a message. We'll reply with 1 day.

DELIVERY INFORMATION

Is delivery free?

Your first 3 deliveries every month are FREE! The Book Liker plan is a limited plan with only 2 books per month, so you will receive 1 delivery per month.

I want my books tomorrow. What should I do?

Be sure to schedule your delivery by 12:00 noon (not 12:00 midnight) if you want them tomorrow.

I missed the 12:00 noon cutoff. Can I call and request a special delivery the same day?

We can no longer prepare special deliveries because books are picked up by the courier the previous afternoon. For example, deliveries for May 2nd are prepared and sent on May 1st.

Please select a delivery for the next available delivery date.

I forgot to add more books to my Rental Queue but I requested a delivery. Can you select some books for me?

We can only send books that are in your Rental Queue. If your queue is empty, we will email you that we cannot send your delivery because there are no books in your queue.

If there are books in your queue, we will send what is there, even if it is below the maximum number of books you are allowed.

I want a certain book. How can I get it?

If you need a certain book for a book club or school project, leave a comment with your delivery and we will move it up in the Rental Queue.

However, books that are already rented by someone cannot be put on hold or retrieved. Bookish.ae makes no guarantees as to availability of books.

What happens if I send back fewer books than expected?

If you have more books than your plan allows, we will only send the number of books to return your books at-a-time to the maximum. For example, if you are on the Little Book Lover plan and get 6 books at-a-time but have 8 books out (this happens when someone tells us they will send back 6 but only send back 4), we will only send 4 books.

What if I need more deliveries?

For most members, 3 deliveries is more than they requested every month under the old system. If you need more deliveries in a month under your current plan, you can request a paid delivery. The fee is AED 20 and can be deducted from your deposit.

You may also consider joining the Book Family plan that allows 10 books at-a-time.

My delivery was made at 2:00 pm when I requested 9:00 to 1:00.

The courier delivers according to his route and your availability. We have given the courier instructions to call before the delivery but this does not always happen.

If your delivery has an issue (e.g., late, books bent), please complete a Delivery Feedback form. We compile your comments so that we can provide summary feedback to the courier company.

I scheduled a delivery but now I am going out. How do I cancel it?

When the driver calls you, tell him you are going out. He will arrange a time to deliver your books the next day. If you are unavailable to next day, the books will be sent back to us. Books that are returned are checked back in.

In this situation, this delivery will be deducted from your deliveries for the month and you will have to schedule another delivery.

Make sure you will be at home or in the office on the day you requested a delivery. If you have to go out, arrange to have a helper, friend, or neighbor receive the books. Your delivery must be signed for so it cannot be left on your door.

Can I call the driver myself?

Different drivers have different routes on different days. We prefer you call the Bookish.ae office so we can liaise with the courier company.

Can I leave the bags on the door or at reception?

You can leave the bags at reception or with a helper if someone is there. There must be a person to sign for the courier.

I didn't use all my deliveries last month. Can I roll them over?

You cannot accumulate deliveries or roll them over to the next month. Your delivery count starts over every month.

QUESTIONS ABOUT BOOKISH.AE WEBSITE

I’m having trouble signing in. What can I do?

Be sure you are signing in with the correct email address and password. If you have already retrieved your password using Forgot Your Password? but still experience issues, email us at info@bookish.ae.

What should I do if I forgot my password?

Click My Account in the top right corner of the site. Below Bookish.ae Members, click Forgot Your Password? Enter your email address in the box and you will receive a link to reset your password. If you continue to experience issues, you can email us at info@bookish.ae.

How do I search for books?

To search for books, use the search bar at the top of the homepage. You can enter an author name, book title, or ISBN. Our system will search for the author using the first and/or last name. When searching by book title, the more you can type from the title, the better your results will be. If you decide to search by ISBN, keep in mind that you must take out the dash (i.e., write the ISBN as 10 or 13 numbers only) and that different print runs of a book often have different ISBNs. Therefore, we recommend you search by title instead. If you can’t find a book, email us at info@bookish.ae and we’ll let you know if we have it.

How does My Wishlist work?

If you’ve created a customer account, then you have a wishlist! When you find a book you like, click on it. On the book description page, you will see a red heart next to Add To Queue. Click the heart to add a book to your wishlist. If you want to see all the books you have added to your wishlist, click My Wishlist in the top right corner of the website. We highly recommend adding books that you might want to read to your wishlist. My Wishlist makes it much easier to rent books you like quickly.

How do I join Bookish.ae and get books?

You can join Bookish.ae, add books to your Rental Queue, and schedule your delivery all at the same time. Click here for a detailed guide to joining and adding books to your queue. If you have any problems, email or call us and we will help you.

How do I add books to my Rental Queue?

You must be a Bookish.ae member and logged in to add books to your Rental Queue. Simply find a book you like and click it. On the book description page, you will see a red button that reads Add To Queue. If you are logged into Bookish.ae, a window will pop up asking you to select a date and time for delivery. As you add books to your Rental Queue, you will see the number of books in the red bag in the top right corner of the website increase. After you have added enough books to your Rental Queue, click that bag and you will be taken to your Rental Queue.
